What is the Relationship Between Insulin Levels and Asthma?

Grant Awarded:

  • ACRC Early Career Investigator

Research Disease:

  • asthma

Many people with asthma don't respond well to conventional treatments. This is especially true for people who have asthma that is caused by factors other than typical things such as allergy. However, we currently do not have a good understanding of what these other factors are. Identifying them is important, because it can lead to the discovery of new drugs and therapies that can help people with uncontrolled or severe asthma. One of these factors could be insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugars. When people develop diabetes, their body is exposed to higher levels of insulin than normal, and this could trigger asthma. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between insulin levels and several asthma outcomes in 64 individuals with not well-controlled asthma. This information will help us decide if future studies looking at treating elevated insulin can be effective at making asthma control better.
