Christine E. Sheffer, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, is an associate professor of oncology in the Department of Health Behavior at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is the president of the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs, the accrediting body for Tobacco Treatment Specialist training programs. She is also the director of Research and Evaluation for Roswell Park Cessation Services, which operates multiple tobacco treatment systems and quitline services for the states of New York and New Jersey, as well as several healthcare insurance providers and employers.
As a clinician, researcher, and educator, Dr. Sheffer's goals include increasing the efficacy and uptake of high-quality evidence-based treatments for tobacco dependence and enabling individuals to obtain the treatment they need to achieve and maintain good health. Dr. Sheffer's research focuses on the examination of bio-behavioral mechanisms that sustain tobacco dependence. Her work focuses on improving the efficacy and uptake of empirically-supported treatments for tobacco use, particularly among groups that experience tobacco-related health disparities; investigating neurocognitive processes associated with tobacco dependence and other risky and addictive health behaviors; and investigating effective methods to train healthcare providers in the treatment of tobacco dependence. Dr. Sheffer joined the Roswell Park faculty in 2016. She previously served as faculty in the City University of New York Medical School and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
