We collect information about your use of Lung Association websites using cookies and other similar technologies (see discussion of cookies, below), including but not limited to your search activity, the pages you view, the date and time of your visit. We also collect information that your device provides us such as browser type, type of device, browser language, IP address, mobile carrier, location, and requested and referring URLs.

The information we collect automatically is statistical data, and does not identify any individual. It helps us to improve our website by enabling us to do things such as:

  • Estimate our audience size, geographic location, and usage patterns.
  • Store information about your preferences, allowing us to customize our website according to your individual interests.
  • Speed up your searches.
  • Recognize you when you return to our website.
  • Provide better services and features in the future.
  • Make known third-party goods and services for those who may be interested.

Social media:

We gather information from social networking sites (such as, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). We collect information from social media activity, including likes, shares and tweets about our content on social networking sites. Where you sign in to the Site using social network credentials, such as a Facebook login, you grant permission to the social network to share your user details with us.

Internet Protocol Address (IP):

Third-party services collect an IP address from all visitors to our website. An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your computer when you use the internet. We use IP addresses to help diagnose problems with our server, administer our website, analyze trends, track user's movement, gather broad demographic information for aggregate use in order for us to improve the website, and deliver customized, personalized content. The third-party services we currently use are provided by the following companies (click the hyperlinks for more information): Maxmind (geo-IP targeting), Google (analytics/tracking pixel), Facebook (tracking pixel), and Blackbaud (website hosting provider).

Cookies:

Our website uses cookies to enhance your experience while using our website. Cookies are pieces of information that some websites transfer to the computer that is browsing that website and are used for record-keeping and other purposes at many websites. Use of cookies makes web-surfing easier by performing certain functions such as saving your passwords and your personal preferences regarding your use of the Site, attempting to serve you with the most appropriate advertising, and making sure you don't see the same ad repeatedly. Many consider the use of cookies to be an industry standard.

We use cookies to:

  • Understand and save user's preferences for future visits.
  • Compile aggregate data about website traffic and website interactions in order to offer better website experiences and tools in the future.
  • Enable us to serve targeted advertising to you on our behalf and on behalf of third parties.
  • Store visitor email addresses (if provided).
  • We may also use trusted third-party services, such as Google Analytics, that track this information on our behalf. Click here to review the privacy notice for Google Analytics.

Your browser is probably set to accept cookies. However, if you would prefer not to receive cookies, you can alter the configuration of your browser to refuse cookies. If you choose to have your browser refuse cookies, it is possible that some areas of our website will not function properly when you view them. Some of our business partners (e.g., advertisers) use cookies on our Site. We have no access to or control over these cookies. This Privacy Notice covers the use of cookies by the Site only and does not cover the use of cookies by any advertisers.

Flash LSOs:

We use local shared objects, also known as Flash cookies, to store your preferences such as volume control or display content based upon what you view on our Site to personalize your visit. Third Parties, with whom we partner to provide certain features on the Site or to display advertising based upon your Web browsing activity, use Flash cookies to collect and store information.

Flash cookies are different from browser cookies because of the amount of and type of data they gather, and how the data is stored. Cookie management tools provided by your browser will not remove Flash cookies. To learn how to manage privacy and storage settings for Flash cookies please visit this site

Pixel tags and other similar technologies:

The Site uses a variety of technical methods for tracking purposes, including pixel tags and Web beacons. Web beacons are small pieces of data that are embedded in images on the pages of websites. We also use these technical methods to analyze the traffic patterns on the Site, such as the frequency with which our users visit various parts of the Site. These technical methods may involve the transmission of information either directly to us or to another party authorized by us to collect information on our behalf. We also use these technical methods in HTML emails that we send to determine whether the recipients have opened those emails and/or clicked on links in those emails. The information from use of these technical methods may be collected in a form that is personally identifiable.

IP addresses and click-stream data:

As is true of most websites, we automatically gather information such as Internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, the files viewed on our site (e.g., HTML pages, graphics, etc.), operating system, date/time stamp, and/or clickstream data to analyze trends in the aggregate and administer the Site.

An IP address is a number associated with the service through which you access the Internet, like your ISP (Internet service provider), your company, or your university. Standing alone, your IP address is not personally identifiable. At times, we also use IP addresses for purposes of system administration and to report aggregate information to advertisers, for example regarding the frequency with which our guests visit various parts of the Site. We may combine this information with PII we obtain from you directly on the Site, or from third parties.

Click-stream data is information collected by our computers when you request pages from the Site. Click-stream data may include such information as the page served, the time, the source of the request, the type of browser making the request, the preceding page view and other such Non-Personal Information.

When analyzed, this data helps us analyze how visitors arrive at the Site, what type of content is most popular, what type of visitors in the aggregate are interested in particular kinds of content and advertising, and the like.

Behavioral targeting / re-targeting:

We may partner with a third-party ad network to either display advertising on the Site or to manage our advertising on other sites. Our ad network partner might use cookies and Web beacons to collect information about your activities on this and other Web sites to provide you targeted advertising based upon your interests. If you do not wish to have this information used for the purpose of serving you targeted ads, you may opt-out by sending an email to: webmaster@lung.org. Please note this does not opt you out of being served advertising. You will continue to receive generic ads.

Geolocation data:

We may use geolocation technology to track the location of Site visitors in order to better understand which geographic markets we serve.

Google:

Google's advertising requirements can be summed up by Google's Advertising Principles

Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on other websites. Google's use of the DART cookie enables it to serve ads to our users based on previous visits to our website and other websites on the Internet. Users may opt-out of the use of the DART cookie by visiting the Google Ad and Content Network privacy policy.

We have implemented the following:

  • Google Display Network Impression Reporting
  • DoubleClick Platform Integration
  • Demographics and Interests Reporting

We, along with third-party vendors such as Google, use first-party cookies (such as the Google Analytics cookies) and third-party cookies (such as the DoubleClick cookie) or other third-party identifiers together to compile data regarding user interactions with ad impressions and other ad service functions as they relate to our Site.

Opting out of targeted advertising:

You can set preferences for how Google advertises to you using the Google Ad Settings page. Alternatively, you can opt out by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative Opt Out page or by using the Google Analytics Opt Out Browser add on.

Tell-A-Friend:

If a user elects to use our referral service for informing a friend about our website, we ask them for the friend's name and email address. American Lung Association will automatically send the friend a one-time email inviting them to visit the Site. American Lung Association stores this information for the sole purpose of sending this one-time email.

  • To serve you with our or third-party advertising.

We may share some information about you with partners for marketing purposes. The American Lung Association may also rent or exchange your personal information with other organizations, and we may also use your personal information and browsing history to contact you for communications and marketing purposes. To be excluded from our sharing your PII with other organizations and exchange program or to unsubscribe from postal mailings, please visit Lung.org/consumerchoice and select your preferences from our Consumer Choice Menu. We therefore have no responsibility or liability for the content and activities of these linked sites. Nonetheless, we seek to protect the integrity of our site and welcome any feedback about these sites.

How does our Site handle Do Not Track signals?

Some web browsers may transmit "do not track" signals to the websites and other online services with which the browser communicates. There is no standard that governs what, if anything, websites should do when they receive these signals.  We do not currently take action in response to these signals. If and when a standard for responding is established, we may revisit our policy on responding to these signals.
