Martin Joyce-Brady, M.D. is associate professor of medicine at the Pulmonary Center of Boston University School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (1979, AOA) and fulfilled a three-year traditional internal medicine residency, as well as a chief medical residency, on the Medicine Service at Boston City Hospital (1979-1983). He completed pulmonary fellowship training at the Pulmonary Center of Boston University under the leadership of Dr. Gordon L. Snider. He was trained in the study of alveolar epithelial cell differentiation and lung development by Dr. Jerome S. Brody. His laboratory studied the role of glutathione metabolism and oxidant stress in the in the developing, the mature and the injured lung and the lung lining fluid. These studies included the role of glutathione in antioxidant defense with a focus on asthma and during birth when the lung transitions from a secretary to a gas exchange organ. Exploring lung development provided novel insights into gene mechanisms that were reactivated for repair following lung injury and novel targets for therapeutic intervention.
Throughout this time he has worked with the American Lung Association nationally and regionally on grant review and funding as well as locally in the Massachusetts pulmonary section of the Lung Association where he is currently president of the society and chair of the Research Committee. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care medicine and provides service at Boston Medical Center and North Shore Medical Center.
