Radon Action Month – Take Action to Protect Yourself from the Second Leading Cause of Lung Cancer: January is Radon Action Month and it’s the perfect time to learn how to protect yourself from the colorless, odorless gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Our new Radon Basics course is a free one-hour interactive online learning program designed to help people understand more about the dangers of radon and the importance of testing your home for radon. COVID-19 & Respiratory Virus Research Award – Second Cycle! As the pandemic continues its global devastation, the Lung Association remains committed to funding and finding scientific solutions. In fact, we recently announced our additional investment in COVID-19  related research through our COVID-19 Action Initiative. This new call for applications for our COVID-19 and Respiratory Virus Research Award is now in progress. The award supports investigators with a stellar track record of accomplishment who have the ability to advance our knowledge of COVID-19 and other novel respiratory viruses with pandemic potential. ADVOCACY

End of Year Legislative Wins for Lung Health: The end of year legislative package signed into law on December 28, 2020, contained many significant wins for lung health, including an end to surprise medical bills, a number of important Medicaid provisions, additional funding for COVID-19 vaccine distribution, lung cancer, and chronic diseases, and a stop to online sales of e-cigarettes to children. For more information on these critical provisions and more, please check out our brief summary of the key lung health provisions included in the final package.  

Help Make Lung Health a White House Priority: As President Biden assumes office, we want to highlight the importance of lung health and make sure that we can continue to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. Help us ensure that President Biden prioritizes lung health in office by signing our petition and telling President Biden what lung health means to you!  

Tell Biden Administration to Take Climate Action: Climate change is a serious and present threat to our health and safety, causing droughts, wildfires, flooding, extreme heat and increased air pollution. Please sign and promote our new petition calling on President Biden to prioritize climate action that protects health, then join the Lung Association in tweeting that it is #TimeToAct on climate change.

TOBACCO

Quit Smoking in 2021: Many people make quitting smoking oneo f their New Year’s resolution. There’s no better way to improve your health, and 70% of smokers say they want to quit. The Lung Association has proven tools and information to help make 2021 the year you begin a new tobacco-free life. Check out our “5 Quit Smoking Tips to Be Tobacco-free in the New Year. ” We’re also proud to announce that we have partnered with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to improve lung health of veterans, including helping vets quit smoking through pre-paid membership in our Freedom From Smoking® program, and our many other cessation resources.

ASTHMA

Asthma Webcast Series –In November, we hosted the first in a series of three webcasts about asthma. These live webcasts are patient-focused and feature clinical presentations as well as a patient perspective. Our first presentation “Getting Familiar with Asthma shared basic information about asthma, asthma and COVID-19 and asthma management.  You can view the recorded version of this presentation. Our latest webcast “Is It More Than Just Bad Asthma?” is on January 19 at 2 p.m. CT. This webcast will provide a more focused understanding of asthma control and whether your asthma may be severe. Learn more and register here.
