Radon Action Month: This radioactive gas is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer, and it could be in your home. January is National Radon Action. During January and throughout the year, the American Lung Association is encouraging radon testing for everyone, including homeowners, renters, real estate agents, building managers and school administrators. Radon is a naturally occurring gas emitted from the ground that is odorless, tasteless and colorless. Radon can enter a home through cracks in walls, basement floors, foundations and other openings and accumulate to high levels inside homes, schools and other buildings. Once detected, there are cost effective ways to reduce that risk. Learn more about radon testing and mitigation at www.lung.org/radon.
Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones from COVID-19: The Lung Association urges people to wear quality masks to prevent transmission, get tested if they have symptoms and discuss treatment options with their healthcare provider ASAP if they have COVID-19. Treatments may help prevent severe illness and prevent hospitalization. The Lung Association has tools and information about getting vaccinated to help keep you and those around you safe!

And major snowstorms or other winter weather events can be dangerous for everyone. Power outages, extreme cold, icy roads and poor heating systems are some of the potential hazards when a winter storm hits. With climate change bringing more extreme fluctuations in weather, the need to prepare for winter storms is even greater and it's important to be ready in the event of severe weather to know how to keep your lungs safe and healthy.

Lung Association Applauds EPA’s Final Rule Limiting Greenhouse Gas Pollution from Cars: On December 20, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the final rule strengthening limits on greenhouse gas emissions for light-duty vehicles for model years 2023-2026. The final rule provides greater emissions reductions than the agency’s initial proposal. We are pleased the EPA listened to the comments of health and medical groups that called for more protective standards. Now that EPA has finalized these cleaner cars standards, the agency must work urgently to propose and finalize stronger greenhouse gas standards for future cars and stronger emissions standards for trucks. See our statement for more.
