Environmental Improvements for COPD and Asthma

Environmental Improvements for COPD and Asthma is a virtual home assessment program for individuals with poorly controlled asthma or COPD.  For this program, a trained American Lung Association staff member virtually walks with you through your home and suggests ways reduce asthma and COPD triggers. During this hour together, you will also learn more about your disease signs and symptoms, medications, disease management plan, and what triggers your symptoms.

The American Lung Association will provide materials to help reduce exposure to triggers, such as bed and pillow covers, green cleaning supplies, vacuums, HEPA air cleaners, and more. When we complete the assessment, you will understand the importance of avoiding triggers.

Program evaluation shows Environmental Improvements for COPD and Asthma:

  1. Reduces asthma symptoms during the day and at night
  2. Reduces school absences
  3. Decreases hospitalizations and emergency department visits
  4. Provides a return on investment of $2.19 for every $1.00 invested by reducing health care costs

Currently, this program is only for children and adults in certain communities. Please contact Shonnel.Blair@Lung.org or Patrick.Hattaway@Lung.org to find out if this program is available in your community.
