Michael Kelley, M.D., was born in San Francisco and grew up in the San Joaquin Valley of California. He received his BA in Zoology at California State University, Fresno and obtained his M.D. from Washington University, St. Louis School of Medicine. His Internship in medicine, residency in radiology as well as an NIH Fellowship in cardiovascular radiology were all obtained at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, Florida.
Following his training, he taught at three medical schools: assistant professor of radiology and medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine; associate professor of radiology and medicine, Yale University School of Medicine; and associate professor of radiology in Residence University of San Diego School of Medicine.
Over the next 30 years, Dr. Kelley practiced cardiovascular, interventional and general radiology in Southern California and in Charlotte, NC, in private practice settings, while maintaining clinical appointments in Radiology at UCSD, UCI, Duke and UNC School of Medicine, where he taught radiology. He is currently an adjunct professor of radiology at the University of NC School of Medicine, Charlotte Campus.
While practicing in Charlotte, Dr. Kelley started a teaching program in radiology for the UNC SOM students who rotated at Carolinas Medical Center where he was chief of radiology and director of medical education from 2006-2018.
He has been a Fellow in both the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association until 2005 and is currently a Fellow in the Society of lnterventional Radiology and the American College of Radiology. He served on the ACR's Ethics Committee for 14 years.
Dr. Kelley has been a manuscript reviewer for the journals Radiology, the American Journal of Radiology and the Journal of Vascular and lnterventional Radiology.
He has published more than 70 articles in the medical literature and presented more than 40 abstracts and scientific presentations. He has written one textbook and edited sections and chapters of more than 20 other textbooks, has given more than 50 courses, seminars and visiting professorships including six on lung cancer and lung cancer screening. Over the years Dr. Kelley has been part of research projects with grant totals of approximately $1 million.
He has been interested in medical ethics for many years and has served as the Chair of the Medical Ethics Committee at Carolinas Medical Center for more than 20 years.
In the community, he has served on the Medical Student Advisory Committee at Davidson College for 20 years and with the Charlotte Bioethics Group for 8 years. His involvement with the American Lung Association began in 2014 and continues today.
