Airway Prevotella promote TLR2-dependent neutrophil activation and rapid clearance of Streptococcus pneumoniae from the lung – Nature

This study discovered that a beneficial bacterium called P. melaninogenica bolsters the immune defenses in the lung against infection with pneumococcal pneumonia. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under 5, so this research is important to understand why some are more predisposed to lung infection than others, and why antibiotics may not be effective. Senior author Dr. Sarah E. Clark is funded by the American Lung Association Innovation Award.
