Dr. Mark Dransfield completed his medical degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997, followed by residency in internal medicine and fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he served as Chief Fellow. He has been on the faculty at UAB since 2003 and is currently Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. He also serves as the Medical Director of the UAB Lung Health Center Pulmonary Rehabilitation department.

Dr. Dransfield's primary research interests are in clinical trials, epidemiology and outcomes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). His research portfolio shows the breath of his experience and interest in COPD and asthma research, including participation in the following well-known investigations: COPDGene, SPIROMICS, National Institutes of Health COPD Clinical Research Network, and the Long Term Oxygen Treatment Trial, Kit Inhibition in Asthma study, and Blacks and Exacerbations on LABA vs. Tiotropium. He is the overall Principal Investigator (PI) for the $11 million, multicenter Department of Defense funded project examining the impact of beta-blockers on COPD exacerbations and is also a key investigator for five R01/R34 projects as well as PI for multiple internally funded and pharmaceutical company sponsored studies including translational projects involving quantitative CT scan analysis.
