In 2009, after coughing uncontrollably for years, I started to develop back pain and was coughing up blood. I brought myself to the hospital where, after several tests, I was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer. In complete disbelief, I immediately went to another hospital and started treatment. With the majority of my family in Puerto Rico however, I felt very alone. English was my second language and it was hard to communicate with my medical team - I was so confused. I'd never even heard of lung cancer in women! After two bouts of treatment and nearing death three times, I'm very excited to say that I've been in remission for almost four years. I share my voice because we all need a hug and a smile. We all need to know that there's always a light at the end of the road.
