My mother is 67 and was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell carcinoma in March 2015. So many statistics and emotions overcame me when she told me the news. She immediately started chemotherapy. Unfortunately, there is not much literature available on small cell carcinoma and the statistics are discouraging.

My mother quit smoking on the day of diagnosis and is doing everything in her power for healthy living like walking and drinking more water. I am hoping that her healthy habits will alter the statistics in her favor. After her second round of chemo, we saw about a 40 percent reduction in the size of the tumors.

Our goal is for remission, a long remission. This cancer typically reoccurs, but maybe with more research in immunotherapy or other therapies, we can beat the odds.
