Newly Diagnosed with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

When your infant is diagnosed with BPD, it can be overwhelming. Work with your child’s health care team, to ensure you understand the condition, treatment options and how to take care of your baby’s daily care once your baby leaves the hospital.

The steps below can help you better understand and manage your baby’s BPD diagnosis:

  • Learn about BPD. It is important to understand how BPD and other lung related conditions like respiratory distress syndrome or RDS affect your infant’s lungs and development.
  • Understand what treatments are needed and how long your infant may need the recommended treatments.
  • Before your baby is discharged, ask about your baby’s daily care plan, any medications or treatments and ways to prevent or reduce future complications.

Getting Support Early Is Important

As a caregiver, it is important to take steps to limit the emotional stress put on your life. Healthcare providers can answer questions and assist with your baby’s care, but you may also want to consider seeking support outside the hospital. Talk with your friends and family and consider joining a community support group for parents of premature newborns, such as an online INSPIRE group.

You can also call the Lung Association's Lung HelpLine at 1-800-LUNGUSA to talk to a trained respiratory professional who can help answer your questions and connect you with additional support.
