How New Englanders Can Protect Their Health During Respiratory Virus Season

Respiratory virus season begins in October, and the American Lung Association is encouraging New Englanders to prepare now. The region, including Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, has a higher proportion of older residents than the national average, with about 1 in 5 people over the age of 65. This aging population is at a greater risk for serious complications, hospitalizations and death from respiratory illnesses like the flu, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

While many people experience mild symptoms, certain people at increased risk can experience severe and even life-threatening illness like pneumonia and worsening of existing medical conditions. These include older adults, especially those 65 and older, and adults with chronic (long-term) medical conditions such as lung or heart disease, diabetes or weakened immune systems.

“Older adults in New England face a higher risk from respiratory illnesses. Thankfully, vaccines are available to help prevent serious complications and protect the health of families across the region,” said Dr. David Hill, immediate past chair of the American Lung Association’s Board of Directors. “We are encouraging everyone to receive recommended vaccines ideally in September or October, so that immunity can develop before these viruses start spreading widely in the community. Talk to your healthcare provider to ensure you and your loved ones are up to date.”

Many healthcare plans cover recommended vaccines with no out-of-pocket costs. Individuals should check with their insurance provider for coverage details. Vaccines may be available at healthcare offices, local pharmacies and public health departments.
