Gift for a Healthier Future

Anne Powell Riley, a lifelong Columbus, Ohio philanthropist and advocate for environmental stewardship, generously funded, in partnership with the Lung Association, a new research award focused on indoor air quality. Her gift supports Alison G. Lee, MD, of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai who is studying how prenatal exposure to indoor air pollution affects infant lung development and future disease risk. By investing in this critical but often overlooked area of lung health research, Anne’s leadership underscores how individual philanthropy can spark meaningful scientific advancement.

Research Reveals Weight-Loss Drugs Safe for Lungs

In a systematic review and meta-analysis led by Ian Saldanha, MBBS, MPH, PhD, of Johns Hopkins University, researchers reviewed nearly 9,000 scientific papers—narrowing them to 123 relevant papers—to examine whether weight-loss medications pose respiratory risks, particularly for people who have asthma. The findings offer reassurance: the data show no evidence these drugs increase the risk of respiratory issues. Dr. Saldanha is a past recipient of the Lung Association’s ACRC Early Career Investigator Grant.
