Cancer that has metastasized, or spread, particularly to the brain, is the leading cause of death for lung cancer patients. While current treatments may attack established tumors, we cannot yet predict where cancer will spread next. Through our research, we aim to understand the earliest step in this process. We believe tumor cells trick host immune cells, including neutrophils, into acting as accomplices. Together, they release messengers called "extracellular vesicles and particles" that travel via blood to prepare distant organs, creating a fertile "soil" for cancer growth. Our project aims to interrupt this partnership. First, we will analyze blood samples to identify unique patterns—derived from tumors and immune cells—that signal high risk. This leads to a simple blood test to predict the risk of cancer spread to the brain before symptoms arise. Second, we will test therapies to block these messages and prevent cancer spread before it starts, prolonging and improving the quality of life.
