Pneumonia is the leading cause of infection-related deaths worldwide with very limited treatment options. Severe pneumonia leading to intubation and death are often caused by too much inflammation in the lungs. It is imperative, then, to understand how inflammation is regulated and how lung repair occurs following lung infection. This study is focused on two specialized immune cells that reside near the lung that may prevent lung injury. We aim to understand how they are established and the mechanisms they use to prevent lung injury. Ultimately, this may provide new avenues for the development of therapeutics that not only prevent infection but also improve repair.
