Despite insurance coverage for lung cancer screening (LCS) and the benefits of survival, LCS utilization remains low. We have developed a multi-level intervention (Empower LCS) that seeks to overcome the main patient-, provider- and system-level barriers to utilization. We will test Empower LCS’ preliminary efficacy versus enhanced usual care to improve rates of lung cancer screening among eligible individuals from two large health systems in California and Georgia. Individuals who do not respond to Empower LCS will receive a follow-up phone call to assist with primary care provider or lung cancer screening scheduling. If successful, this study will provide preliminary data for a larger multi-institutional clinical trial. Our proposed intervention has the potential to decrease lung cancer mortality through early cancer detection.
