We spend about 90% of our time indoors, which accounts for a large fraction of our inhaling air pollutants. The gases and microscopic particles in indoor air pollution can cause serious health negative effects (including asthma, lung disease and cancer), so lowering levels of indoor air pollutants is an important way to improve public health. One way to do this is by the use of “air cleaners,” devices that pull pollutants out of the air. A given air clean, however, could inadvertently increase levels of other pollutants, either by emitting them directly or by generating them via new chemical reactions. In this project, we will examine these processes and their impacts for a range of air cleaners and identify ways to minimize such unintended consequences. This work will help maximize the clean-air benefits of the air cleaners and ultimately will lead to improved indoor air quality and human health.
