Dr. Virella-Lowell is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and is Board Certified in Pediatric Pulmonology. She has over 15 years of experience conducting pediatric clinical trials and serves as the Co-Director of the Pediatric Pulmonary Asthma Program and the Co-Director of the UAB/Children's of Alabama (COA) Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutics Development Center. Dr. Virella-Lowell's primary role in the UAB/COA Asthma Program is to guide the scientific direction of asthma research as it relates to pediatrics at UAB/COA and assist in the implementation and execution of the American Lung Association Airways Clinical Research Centers studies and other asthma clinical trials.

Dr. Virella-Lowell has served as a principal or co-investigator in over 25 cystic fibrosis (CF) clinical trials. She has also served member of the Therapeutics Development Network Protocol Review Committee, the Institutional Review Board and the Institutional Biosafety Committee, which have contributed to her expertise in developing clinical trial protocols, the protection of human subjects and clinical trial regulations. Dr. Virella-Lowell also has a strong interest and experience in quality improvement research both in asthma and CF.
