Purpose of the Research Study

The American Lung Association, in partnership with Rush University Medical Center, is conducting a 5-year research study to learn more about self-management treatment for COPD and different treatment components that may help improve quality of life for people living with COPD. This research study will be nationwide and conducted remotely, by phone or online, and participants will be compensated for their participation.

Participation Details

You may be eligible if you are over 40 years of age and currently have COPD; have been hospitalized for COPD in the past year; use an inhaler for COPD at least once a week; and use a smartphone, tablet or computer.

All study activities are conducted by phone or online, and no in-person visits are required. Study treatment involves up to 14 sessions completed by phone or online over the course of about 3 months. Study participants will also be asked to complete brief, monthly health surveys over the course of about 12 months.

A nationwide group of 448 adults with COPD who have been hospitalized in the past year will be invited to participate. If you fill out the form linked here, a study team member will reach out to you to determine your eligibility and let you know about next steps.

Yes. Participants can earn up to $400 for completing all parts of the study.

Simply visit this link and fill out the brief form. A study team member will contact you within 2-3 days to determine eligibility. You can also call the Lung Helpline 1-800-LUNGUSA (1-800-586-4872) and ask about the COPD READY Research Study.

The study will help to identify effective COPD self-management treatment components. The long-term goal is to build an optimized COPD self-management program and reduce the burden of COPD at a population health level.

This study is in partnership with The American Lung Association and Rush University Medical Center.

This research has been approved by the Rush University Medical Center Institutional Review Board (ORA: 23050802-IRB01).
